The Earth was supposed to be doomed by the Vek emergence, and it almost was. The giant insects came quickly, mercilessly, and seemed unstoppable. But humanity figured out how to jump in time, going to different timelines to try and save the Earth in each one, while there was still earth to save. Oh yeah, and the giant mechs with big guns also helped a lot. Being a mech pilot is hard. It means constantly being reset to the beginning of the war even when you win, just to fight it all over again in a different timeline. You get to keep your memories, but permanence isn't a thing you may ever know again. Min Qiao knew that when she joined up, and she liked the concept. As an orphan who jumped from one home to another growing up, nothing permanent had really ever existed in her life anyway. Apartments were places to sleep. Jobs were ways to make money.
